Welcome back to great news from Towerbank!

Green Flag

We are delighted to announce that Towerbank has successfully renewed its Eco-Schools Green Flag Award status.

We are so proud to have achieved our FIFTH Green Flag! Mrs Hackney and our Eco-Committee met with the assessor from Eco-Schools Scotland just before the October break and shared with him all of our Eco work that is going on from Nursery to Primary 7.  They took the assessor on a tour of the school and grounds and introduced him to many of the classes.  They gave a presentation and shared a question and answer session with him.  The assessor was very impressed with everything he saw and heard and here is a summary of his report:

“I can’t really stress enough how impressed I was by the pupils at Towerbank Primary School. The Eco-Committee did a fantastic job answering my questions and giving me a tour of the school and grounds.  It was so encouraging to hear these young people talk so thoughtfully and passionately about environmental issues.  Many of the questions I asked were answered with talk of the future and discussion of how to make the right decisions when there are many factors to consider.  The pupils have not simply been told about things like Fairtrade, they have discovered the environmental issues surrounding food production for themselves and come to their own decisions.  I really enjoyed talking with the different classes and each one made a valuable contribution to the visit.  It was nice to not only ask questions but be involved in discussions, this gave me the impression that the pupils are very much involved in the direction of their learning and enjoy the discovery that comes with it.  I particularly enjoyed the discussions about litter, seeing that one class was looking at the whole cycle of planting and growing to compost and watching the video about low mileage cake.  It was so encouraging to see that the nursery and P1 were fully involved in Eco-Schools work in an appropriate way with P1 building upon the learning in the nursery.  Often, schools can talk about their work but do not have the evidence to back it up.  You had that in abundance and , in many cases, with several years of information.  I was really impressed the ‘Love Food, Hate Waste’ display and the evidence from ‘No Energy Day’.  I was delighted to see how you had formed your newer Action Plans with the pupils ideas at the centre.  It was also encouraging to see a school that has been a Green Flag school for nearly ten years still evolving and changing, with a focus on integrating Eco-Schools work into the curriculum”.

What a fantastic report.  Well done Towerbank and especially our Eco Committee.  Meet our Eco Committee – Eco Committee 2014 2015   and have a look at our certificate – Green Flag Certificate .

First Week Back

Update

Dear Parents and Carers

We are really pleased to share with you how well our first few days back to school have gone.  The children are looking so smart and have settled in well bringing to school lots of smiles, positivity and enthusiasm.  The Primary One pupils have had a great start and have clearly been well prepared for this important milestone.  They are showing us all how ready they are for a busy year ahead.

We have been informed that school lunches will continue to be soup, sandwiches, fruit and yoghurt for the duration of next week.  This is due, as mentioned before, to ongoing maintenance work at Portobello High School.  We will keep you updated.

I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all the staff here at Towerbank to thank you all for your help and ongoing support. We really appreciate the partnership we have with our parents and carers and look forward to working closely with you over the coming session.

Best wishes

Mrs Gilmour

Please send lunch monies for the week on a Monday, clearly marked with your child’s name, class and days lunch will be taken. Daily cost of lunch – £1.80.

PLAYGROUND PLAN 2014-2015

4.   P3B – Mrs Hambelton will not be in school on Wednesday morning to welcome her class.  She will back in school later in the day.  Mrs Brown will take the class for the first couple of hours.

5.   P1 – As discussed at the transition meetings the Primary One school bags are available to buy at the school office for £4.00.  We would urge all Primary One parents to buy a bag for their child to use as they are a perfect size for what they need to bring and are easily stored in class.

In addition to this update, we will be sending this information out by ParentMail.  If you have not registered with ParentMail, please contact the school office.
